120 grade 5 students participate in a 3 day Leadership Training.  They then apply to become a member of the Student Council.  Out of all the applications, 20 – 25 are chosen for Council.

SC members facilitate programs such as:

* Toys for Tots

* Run altruistic food and monetary collection drives to help needy families in the community and in the country.

* Run school spirit events within McAlister

Creation of Podcasts

Our Library Media Specialist and Music Teacher work with teachers and students to showcase student work.

Podcasts are presented on website for all to hear and enjoy.

Math Olympiads

Each year 50 McAlister students participate in Math Olympiads.

This international mathematics program has our children practicing and competing in math competitions with children around the world!

School-Wide Character Building

Activities to promote “Bucket Filling” based on the book  Have You Filled a Bucket Today?, by Carol McCloud.  The book, A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids, talks about building our own and each other’s self-esteem by adding to positive aspects of our character.

Expanding Horizons

Each year McAlister runs 2 sessions of after school Expanding Horizons extracurricular activities.

Students are encouraged to try new classes such as photography, volunteerism, beaded jewelry making, Irish step-dancing, jump roping, cake decorating and even fun with Fondue!

Field Day

Over the years, we have grown our field day to be a memorable event complete with a live D.J., cooperative team games, a Barbecue lunch, and even a visit by an ice cream truck!

We have a truly AMAZING group of dedicated volunteers to provide enrichment to our curriculum in the form of:

Performances, theatrical learning experiences, author visits, book fairs and grade level traditions.

The PTO also organizes and provides funding for many other events making our school the special place it is!

Open Houses and Curriculum Nights

These nights allow families and students to visit our school and celebrate children’s’ work.  It also lets them explore the curricular areas and gather our school community together to celebrate our children’s’ learning experiences!

Musical Events

5th grade Band – Each year, approximately 140 are excited to become a part of the McAlister Intermediate Band.  They get to try an instrument they may have never played.  Our band director and teachers work with students both in a group and individual lessons to allow them to hone their instrument skills.  They perform at a winter and spring concert.

Chorus - To complement our program, we also have students who choose to perform in our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade level chorus!

Student Art Showcase

Students work hard alongside our Art teacher to create memorable and professional quality artwork.

Their artwork is showcased in our school hallways, bulletin boards and main office and is rotated throughout the year!  It is like having an art show all year long!

Nutmeg Book Awards

Every spring, 100’s of students read Nutmeg nominated books and vote on their favorite in accordance with Nutmeg Book Awards.

This is a great opportunity for all students to participate in wide reading of quality student literature.
