Important CAPT Information
February 18, 2010
Dear Parent(s)
Each year 10th grade students in Connecticut’s public schools take the Connecticut academic Performance Test (CAPT), but the test administration affects the school day for all students. In addition, the 9th grade class will take a diagnostic CAPT exam. This practice exam helps the faculty adjust the curriculum to better prepare students for live CAPT the following year. There are 4 sections: Mathematics Science Reading Across the Disciplines Writing Across the Disciplines
Recent state legislation requires that CAPT scores be used as a criterion for determining whether a student graduates from high school. This law went into effect years ago and applies again this year to the current 10th graders who are about to take the CAPT.
The content of the CAPT is carefully integrated into our curriculum to prepare our students for success. In addition to determining graduation status, each student’s performance on the CAPT is noted on his/her transcript. Employers and colleges are increasingly aware that performance on the CAPT may be an indicator of success on the job or in college therefore, for several reasons, it is essential for students to approach the CAPT seriously. Communities clearly consider CAPT scores a measure of the quality of education at local high schools. In conclusion, if your student is taking CAPT this year, please encourage your son or daughter to do the best he/she can. Teachers and students have already worked hard to prepare for the test.
The schedule for the CAPT and diagnostic CAPT is as follows:
Date Grades 9 & 10 Time 3/2 Interdisciplinary Writing I & Science I 7:30-10:10 3/3 Response to Literature & Science II 7:30-10:1180 3/4 Interdisciplinary Writing II & Reading for Information 7:30-10:05 3/9 Mathematics I 7:30-9:00 3/10 Mathematics II 7:30-9:00 3/11 Edit & Revision & Interdisciplinary Writing III 7:30-9:40
Please be aware the students in grade 11 & 12 who are NOT taking the CAPT are required to be in school after CAPT during the testing days. Students enrolled in AP courses might have review session with their teachers during CAPT testing times. AP teachers will make arrangements with the students. Buses will be provided for 11 and 12 grade students as needed. They need to check with their bus driver for late pick up time. Ninth and tenth grade students have a full day of school. In the event of a weather-related delayed opening, testing will begin on a 90 minute delayed opening. Juniors and seniors will begin on a three hour delayed opening. If there is a school closing, the day’s schedule will simply be forwarded to the next school day.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the school. Thank you.
Sincerely
Rosa M. Pérez, Vice Principal
