Dear Suffield Families,

On Feb. 6, Administrators will present a proposal to the Board of Education regarding potential changes to our current schedule in order to provide additional collaborative time and professional development opportunities for our teachers. The Board is grateful for the Early Release Committee comprised of teachers, administrators and parents, the active public engagement, and the important feedback from all stakeholders during the past months and it's impact on the committee forming the recommendations.

The Board recognizes that our current policy on Public Comment at BOE meetings may not provide the necessary time to accommodate all members of the community that may want to speak to the Board on this proposal and have their feedback shared in the public sphere. In order to ensure all interested have the opportunity to speak, the Board has planned a special board meeting on Wednesday, February 22nd at 6:00 p.m. in the Suffield High School Library Media Center. This meeting will consist only of a dedicated, extended Public Comment on the Early Release Proposal. We are looking forward to hearing this important feedback from the community.

The Board is grateful for the support and partnership from Suffield families as we work together to promote the achievement and success of all Suffield students.

Respectfully,

The Suffield Board of Education

Jeanne Gee, George Beiter, Lori D'Ostuni, Susi Keane, John Richter, Michael Sepko, Matt Service, Natalie Semyanko, Kendra Wiesel

Wildcats Hockey 1st Annual Alumni Jamboree to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project was a huge success. The rink was filled with current and former student athletes and fans from Suffield, Granby, and Windsor Locks. The current players chose the Wounded Warrior Project as a charity because they wanted to help our military troops and veterans. The Wildcats Hockey Booster Club did an excellent job coordinating the event raising $941 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Assistant Wildcats Hockey Coach Jon Cieri did a great job reaching out to the alumni for the game. Even though several of the alumni graduated many years ago, they all still feel a strong bond with the Wildcats Hockey Program. Friday night was a success for all involved.

In an effort to increase community awareness of SHS programming and activities the school has created a new Twitter page. Please find and follow the Twitter name @suffield_hs as we are hopeful that parents, students, and the community will find this additional means of communication helpful as we highlight the wonderful things happening at SHS. Examples of some recent posts include biotechnology work happening as part of a grant through Amgen Pharmaceuticals, opening night of the SHS basketball season including a Unified Basketball game vs. East Windsor, an announcement regarding the school's commitment to the CIAC Class Act School Sportsmanship framework, and a congratulations to this year's CAPSS Student Award Recipient.

With winter weather already having arrived, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the district's procedures relative to school closings, delays, and early dismissals. The district will communicate the decision to parents to close school, delay the opening, or dismiss early using our electronic alert telephone system. This system provides us with the capability to send a message to your home and cell phone by either text message or voice message. Information related to delayed openings and school closures will typically be communicated by 5:30 a.m. The district's status is always posted on the district website at www.suffield.org...

Attention Juniors and Seniors: Representatives from the following four schools will be here at SHS on Wednesday and Thursday: Hartwick College, Johnson & Wales University, Asnuntuck Community College, and Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Many of the college representatives that visit Suffield High are the same people reading your admissions application, so seniors, it maybe in your best interest to speak with them if applying to their school. If interested in meeting with any of these reps, sign up in the Counseling Office.
